MY PERSONAL OPINION OF “How to Sell a Haunted House” by Grady Hendrix
I got the book from Target during a book sale. I got it 30% discounted in paperback. I read a previous book by him, which I truly enjoyed, and I was enticed by the premise of this book. I started reading it right on September 1st as part of the spooky reading list I had planned for September/October.
This book was a great read. It was funny at times, fast paced, emotionally exhausting, creepy as hell, scary and jumpy, it was great!. I enjoyed the characters, Louise and Mark, how their relationship unraveled as the truth behind their haunted house (and dolls/puppets) comes about. I think their mom Nancy was a very intriguing and perplexing character, that towards the end you start understanding more.
The end was extraordinary. Tiring and revealing at the same time. I was exhausted and relieved towards the end of the book. It was fantastic.
I recommend this book if you want a out of the box weird horror book. I truly enjoyed this book.
PREMISE OF THE BOOK AS FOUND IN AMAZON / GOODREADS:
When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn’t want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world.
Most of all, she doesn’t want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success. Unfortunately, she’ll need his help to get the house ready for sale because it’ll take more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime of memories to get this place on the market.
But some houses don’t want to be sold, and their home has other plans for both of them…
MY RATING:
My rating for this book is a solid 4.8
