MY PERSONAL OPINION OF “SKELLIG” BY DAVID ALMOND
I got the book from my oldest son’s bookshelf. This book is in the list of “1000 books to read before you die,” and I retrieved it to read it, with the audiobook from Libby, which I really enjoyed.
This book was a great read. I really enjoyed the writing and how the pace was set, with really short chapters. The story is sad, but tender; it is scary, but lovely; it is stressful, but hopeful. The end brought a lot of peace to the story. The friendship between Michael and Mina, and between them and Skellig is tangible and sweet. It was written with a tender, smart, hopeful voice that made the narrative easy to follow.
I recommend this book if you want to have a light read rich in beautiful writing, moving characters within the context of a child narrative.
PREMISE OF THE BOOK AS FOUND IN AMAZON / GOODREADS:
Ten-year-old Michael was looking forward to moving into a new house. But now his baby sister is ill, his parents are frantic, and Doctor Death has come to call. Michael feels helpless. Then he steps into the crumbling garage. . . . What is this thing beneath the spiders’ webs and dead flies? A human being, or a strange kind of beast never before seen? The only person Michael can confide in is his new friend, Mina. Together, they carry the creature out into the light, and Michael’s world changes forever. . . ..
MY RATING:
My rating for this book is a solid 4.2
