MY PERSONAL OPINION OF “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie and Narrated by Sherman Alexie

I got the book from the Library Audiobooks selection. I was going to the book “1000 books to read before you die” and this one was on the list. The Library online selection only had it as an audiobook, and I decided to give it a try… so glad I did. I usually have no good luck with audiobook (with English as second language and all) but this book was amazing.

I truly enjoyed this book, it was emotive, funny, insightful, raw, true, sad, and unapologetic. The main character has as many flaws as virtues. This character represents our fears and hopes. For the first time (to me), it was narrated from a teenager’s point of view growing up in the reservation.

I really enjoyed all the characters in the book. However, upon reflection, I realized most of them were sad and dark. I also really enjoyed the hope and dreams that the main character injected in his stories. It was inspiring to see his resilience. No matter how bad it looked, he had his vision set far enough. This ensured that hope was always present.

I totally recommend this book for kids and adults! The audiobook (narrated by the author) was by far one of the best audiobooks I have ever read.

PREMISE OF THE BOOK AS FOUND IN AMAZON / GOODREADS:

Heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is based on the author’s own experiences, coupled with poignant drawings by Ellen Forney that reflect the character’s art, chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he was destined to live.

MY RATING:

Rating: 5 out of 5.
